Tennis is...

A message to be passed along to the parents, players and fans of State College Tennis. Hopefully, this will help to answer some of the questions about tennis in general, team play and the difference between singles and doubles.

Tennis is a lifetime sport. It offers health benefits and social, developmental, and competitive opportunities unlike almost any other activity. It is a beautiful, graceful dance and at the same time demands great athleticism, keen concentration and a desire to win. Tennis requires a combination of technical, tactical, physical and mental skills to produce a good player.

By its nature, tennis is an individual sport. So one of the challenges of a high school team is to merge individuals into a cohesive unit - a team. Another test is to identify strong singles players and strong doubles players. Singles and doubles are two completely different games. The basic strokes remain the same, but the similarities end there. Singles is a game of patience, stamina, lateral movement and baseline rallies; doubles is a game of precision, consistency, vertical movement and aggressive net play. Singles is a game of wills while doubles can be a game of wits. Singles points contain long rallies while doubles points often end quickly. There are great tactical differences between the two games but both are equally important to a high school team.

As always, Coach Jackie and I will continue to do our best to put our strongest and most competitive team on the court for matches.
