Jones moves into district final
From CDT staff reports
ALTOONA — State College’s Corinne Jones is one step away from defending her District 6 Class AAA singles tennis title.
Jones breezed through her two matches Friday in straight sets in the district tournament at Altoona’s Leopold Rec Center. The senior returns to the court at 11 a.m. today back at the Leopold Center to face Hollidaysburg’s Anisa Khalouf for a spot in next month’s PIAA Championship tournament. Jones beat the freshman 6-0, 6-1 in a match in State College last month.
“Corinne is a pretty experienced player,” Lady Little Lions coach Jane Borden said. “I think she’ll be fine. The only thing she’ll have to get over is playing indoors on that surface. ... It’s old and really quick.”
Jones won her first match 6-3, 6-2 over Altoona’s McKenna Dixon and then dropped Khalouf’s older sister, Natalie, 6-1, 6-1 in the semifinals.
Anisa Khalouf ousted Johnstown’s Katy Landis in her opening match, then dropped State College’s Cara Rangaswamy 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals. Rangaswamy had earlier outlasted Altoona’s Ashli Livermore 6-4, 4-6, 6-4.
“That was a tough match,” Borden said. “She really played an excellent tournament.”

State College’s Jones wins second straight district title
ALTOONA — State College senior girls’ tennis player Corinne Jones easily got past Hollidaysburg’s Anisa Khalouf on Saturday to win her second consecutive District 6 Class AAA Singles title.
Jones, a senior, breezed past the freshman by scores of 6-2, 6-0 and advances to the PIAA Class AAA Championships, Nov. 6-7 at Hershey.
“This was Corinne’s third time in the district final and she knew what to expect,” said State College coach Jane Borden. “Corinne has worked hard all year and was well prepared. Her biggest challenge today was adapting to a different surface.”
Altoona Mirror
State College's Corinne Jones won her second title.
Jones, the top-seed and defending district champ, won the Class AAA title with a 6-2, 6-0 victory over Hollidaysburg freshman Anisa Khalouf.
"She was setting up points really well," Khalouf said. "She had a lot of forehand winners off of hard serves that moved me off the court."
Jones had success by continually moving the ball all over the court.
"That's her game. She puts the ball where she wants to put it," Hollidaysburg coach Brian Denis said. "Anisa acquitted herself very well though. There's no shame in losing to one of the better players in the state.

Lady Little Lions fall in tennis final
HOLLIDAYSBURG — State College’s hopes of capturing a District 6 Class AAA team tennis title ended with a 3-2 loss to Hollidaysburg in a four-hour match staged Wednesday.
The teams split two three-set matches, with State College earning a critical point from the No. 2 doubles team of Kelly DiMuccio and Becca Rountree, who defeated Mindy Hayton and Jessilyn Stoltz 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
The final match off the court was a thrilling No. 2 singles tangle between State College sophomore Cara Rangaswamy and Hollidaysburg senior Natalie Khalouf. After dropping the first set, Rangaswamy rallied from a 5-2 deficit to take the second set in a tiebreaker. Rangaswamy took a 5-2 lead in the third, but Khalouf raillied to complete a 6-3, 6-7 (6), 7-6 (3) victory, giving the Lady Golden Tigers the decisive team point.
“I thought Cara played so well,” State College coach Jane Borden said. “She put her whole heart and soul into the match. It’s tough when it’s riding on whether you win or not. She’s such a young kid and she handled it so well and with so much class.”
State College received its other victory at No. 1 singles, where two-time district champion Corinne Jones breezed past Anisa Khalouf 6-1, 6-1. Hollidaysburg’s Megan Betwy defeated Desiree Dennis 6-2, 6-3 at No. 3 singles and the Lady Golden Tigers’ No. 1 doubles team of Maria Turiano and Susie Ellis defeated Jenna Max-field and Maria DiMuccio 6-3, 6-3.
State College, which lost to Hollidaysburg 7-0 and 5-2 earlier this year, finishes the team portion of its season 9-7.
“We played a great match,” Borden said. “It’s always tough to end a season with a loss, but everybody does unless you’re the state champion.”
